This notice is for couriers who apply to carry a MOVOS unit, or who carry one. It explains what we collect, why, who sees it and what you can do about it. Our privacy policy covers the rest of movos.ca.
The short version
- While your unit is on, it reports its location. That’s how it plays the right ad, proves the ad ran and lets us look after the unit.
- It’s the unit’s location. But the unit is assigned to you, so its location also shows where you were while it was on. We treat it as your personal information.
- We ask for your consent when you join, before you carry a unit.
- You can ask to see and correct what we hold about you.
What we collect
When you apply
The rider application asks for:
- your first and last name, mobile number, email and the area you ride in;
- your vehicle, whether it has a rear rack or box, and your bag type;
- your typical weekly hours, usual zones and shift times;
- the delivery platforms you ride for, if you choose to tell us;
- confirmation that you’re 18 or older;
- your consent to be contacted about your application by SMS, phone or email, and, if the form offers them and you choose, your consent to get updates from MOVOS.
We don’t ask for your date of birth or any ID numbers.
Our privacy policy lists the technical details recorded with every form, such as your consent record.
When you join
We keep a record of which unit is assigned to you, and when. We also collect what we need for your rider agreement and to pay you. Before we collect it, we’ll tell you in writing what that is.
While your unit is on
While it’s switched on, your unit sends us:
- its location, from the unit’s own GPS, and the zone it’s in;
- what it played, where and when, which is called proof of play;
- its health: battery level, signal strength and a regular heartbeat that shows it’s online.
The location comes from the unit’s own GPS, not from your phone. Before you carry a unit, we’ll tell you in writing how often it reports its location and how precise that location is.
MOVOS doesn’t use cameras or microphones to record you, the street or anyone on it.
The unit also counts nearby devices to measure ads. That count is aggregate, and it isn’t used to identify you or anyone else. The street privacy notice explains how counting works.
When it reports
The unit reports its location while it’s switched on. It’s meant to be on during your shifts. If it’s on outside a shift, it still reports where it is.
Why we use it
- To play the right ad. The unit uses its location to pick the campaign booked for the zone it’s in.
- To prove ads ran. Advertisers get a record of where and when their ads played.
- To run the fleet. We watch battery, signal and heartbeat so we can plan battery swaps, fix faults and spot units that go offline.
We won’t use unit data for a new purpose without telling you first and, where the law requires, asking for your consent.
Who sees it
- People at MOVOS who run the fleet and support riders.
- Advertisers, who see where and when their ads played. They don’t get your name or contact details.
- Fleet partners. If your vehicle or bag comes from one of our fleet partners, that partner may see the location and status of the units on its fleet.
- Service providers that carry and store unit data for us, such as mobile network and hosting providers. Some may process it outside Canada.
We don’t sell rider location data. We disclose it to anyone else only when the law requires or allows it, for example to comply with a court order.
Your consent
We ask for your consent to collect and use unit data when you join the programme, before you carry a unit. You’ll get this notice at that time.
You can withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us (see “Questions and complaints” below). The unit can’t work without reporting its location, so withdrawing consent means you’d stop carrying a unit and return it to us. We keep what we’ve already collected only as this notice allows.
How long we keep it
- Applications that don’t go ahead: 24 months after our last contact with you, like other form submissions.
- Your rider records, such as your agreement and payments: while you ride with MOVOS, and after that for as long as the law requires, for example for tax records.
- Location history, proof-of-play records and unit health data: before you carry a unit, we’ll tell you in writing how long we keep each one. We won’t keep any of it longer than we need for the purposes above, or than the law requires.
When we no longer need it, we delete it or make it anonymous so it can’t be linked to you.
How we protect it
Location history can be sensitive. We limit access to the people at MOVOS who need it, and protect it with safeguards that match its sensitivity.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, including your unit’s location records from while it was assigned to you. You can also ask us to correct anything that’s wrong. We may ask you to confirm your identity first. We’ll reply within 30 days, the time Canada’s federal privacy law (PIPEDA) allows.
Questions and complaints
Send us a message through our contact form:
- about the rider programme, choose Riding with MOVOS as the topic;
- about your privacy, or to make a request, choose Privacy.
If you’re not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at priv.gc.ca.
Changes to this notice
If we change what the unit collects or how we use it, we’ll tell you before the change takes effect, and ask for your consent again where the law requires.
